Frank D'Amelio Sr., Herb Extract Pioneer, Dies at 81

Dear Valued ABC Supporter,

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of Frank D’Amelio, Sr. on Friday, June 11, just three days after his 81th birthday, due to complications from COVID-19.

He and his wife Josephine founded Bio-Botanica, the Long Island, New York-based manufacturer of botanical extracts in the early 1970s.

Frank was an ardent student of herbs and botanical formulations, especially the Eclectic medical movement as epitomized by the writings and extraction techniques of the famous John Uri Lloyd in the early 20th century. He spent countless hours in his own laboratory in his home in Florida.

Frank was a dear friend since I met him in the middle 1970s, when he and “Jo” introduced what was probably the very first line of botanical extracts to the incipient herb market in the United States. The line, initially branded as Bio-Botanica, later became Nature’s Answer®, while the Bio-Botanica name has been retained for the name of the company and its sales of bulk extracts to customers in the manufacturing sector of the herb and dietary supplement, conventional food, and cosmetic industries.

He was also a strong supporter of ABC and our nonprofit research and educational mission.

We have now lost another true pioneer of the modern herbal movement in the United States. On behalf of all of ABC Staff and Board of Trustess, I offer our heartfelt condolences to his wife Josephine, his son Frank D’Amelio Jr. and the entire D’Amelio family, and over 250 employees of BioBotanica.

Sincerely,

Mark Blumenthal
